Downriver Linked Greenways East West Trail

Set aside a sunny day to explore 24.5 scenic miles of the Downriver Linked Greenways Trail from Lower Huron Metropark to Lake Erie Metropark. Completed in 2013 through the cooperative efforts of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks and the Downriver Linked Greenways Initiative, this nicely maintained asphalt trail follows the Huron River basin through Lower Huron, Willow, Oakwoods and Lake Erie Metroparks, and the communities of Flat Rock, Brownstown and Gibraltar to the Lake Erie shoreline.

Your adventure begins at Lower Huron Metropark with easy access off I-94 at the Haggerty Road exit. Simply head south on Haggerty Road, which leads you directly into the park. You'll see the trail on the right side of the road as you enter the park. Get on the trail and head east. As you ride through Willow Metropark, take the left fork of the trail along the edge of the river. Continue on to Oakwoods Metropark where you will pass through vast meadows of seasonal wildflowers. Before you reach the Oakwoods Nature Center, turn right and head towards Flat Rock's HuRoc Park and a covered bridge into downtown Flat Rock.

In the city of Flat Rock, use the bike path signage to navigate east along the side path on Gibraltar Road past the community ball fields, library and community center. Follow the trail through a forest behind the community center to Woodruff Road and then on to Lake Erie Metropark. As you enter Lake Erie Metropark, check out the memorial and historical marker for the Battle of Brownstown. Although the east-west trail ends at the marina point observation deck inside Lake Erie Metropark, the north-south trail can be accessed on South Gibraltar Road. Lake Erie Metropark offers many amenities, including a wave pool, food bar and plenty of picnic tables along the water's edge where you can relax and soak up the views of Lake Erie.
