Hines Park Trail

The 17.2-mile Hines Park Trail (and the entire Hines Park complex) is one of Metro Detroit's great recreational treasures. This paved bike and running path follows along the course of Edward Hines Drive and the Rouge River basin, traveling through a long series of Wayne County parks and recreation areas. You'll find easy access all along the Drive and plenty of restrooms, water and places to picnic, play or relax. Edward Hines Drive features wide paved shoulders that are very popular with cyclists who like to ride fast with fewer stops.

Visit on Saturdays (9am to 5pm) during the summer when Edward Hines Drive is closed to motorized traffic from Nankin Mills Park to Helms Haven Rec Area and join hundreds of cyclists, inline skaters and runners as they zoom along the thoroughfare. For a fully fun-filled day, we recommend starting at Northville West Park, just south of downtown Northville, and riding the entire trail to the east end and back again. You'll love it.

I-275 Metro Trail

As its name implies, the 1-275 Metro Trail follows along this major expressway for 32 miles, from a community pathway on Meadowbrook Road in Novi to South Huron Road near New Boston, intersecting the Hines Park Trail, Lower Rouge River Trail and Downriver Linked Greenways Trail along the way. This paved asphalt trail offers a fun way to spend a day racing cars along the freeway. If you like riding fast, this is your trail.

The 1-275 Metro Trail was originally built in 1978 as a new concept in alternative transportation, but was not maintained and fell into serious disrepair. Over the past several years, MDOT has progressively refurbished or completely rebuilt most of the original trail surfaces, bridges and amenities. The final stage of the project was completed in the summer of 2015.

Rouge River Gateway Trail

As you pass under the Ford Road overpass on the Hines Park Trail, the trail continues and changes its name to the Rouge River Gateway Trail. This 2-mile-long scenic bike path crosses two bridges over the Rouge River, through densely forested woodland and the campus ofUM Dearborn, before arriving at the trailhead on Michigan Avenue. The trailhead, across the street from Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum, is also a good place to begin your journey to Northville and back.

Lower Rouge River/ITC Corridor Trail

The 2.75-mile Lower Rouge River Trail follows along the Lower Rouge River from Canton Center Road to the 1-275 Metro Trail in Canton Township. Commune with nature on this 12-foot-wide, finely screened limestone path as you pass through scenic woodland and cross eight numbered bridges over the river. Just west of bridge #6, the new 3.13-mile ITC Corridor Trail begins and heads north connecting with Flodin and Griffin parks.
