Friends of the Flint River Trail

Friends of the Flint River Trail (FFRT) started as an informal bike riding group in 1997 by founders Stephany Diana, Bruce Nieuwenhuis, Jack Minore, and others to promote the safe use of the Flint River Trail for fitness, exercise, and family fun. The group has expanded and grown over the years to include many members and volunteers.

The main purpose of the group is to promote the use of the trail for cycling, walking, and running by hosting bicycle rides every Sunday throughout the spring, summer, and fall. The rides have grown to approximately 800 riders during the season including 150 new or first time riders from across Genesee County and other areas.

FFRT works to promote and publicize the safe use of the trail and to maintain the trail. We advocate for trail expansion and improvements with other groups and organizations. We have joined with others in our community to provide safe and inviting public spaces where people of all ages and abilities can easily integrate fun physical activity into their daily routine.

FFRT is a chapter of the Flint River Watershed Coalition (FRWC). FRWC is a membership organization that promotes citizen stewardship of our natural resources by providing members with the sources, knowledge, and capacity necessary to protect local water quality and watershed habitat. We encourage our members to also become members of FRWC, as membership in FRWC supports the many activities of the Friends of the Flint River Trail.

We invite you to join Friends of the Flint River Trail! For more information, join our
Facebook group or simply show up at the Sunday rides.

Sunday Rides – Join FFRT for group bike rides every Sunday, May through October. The group meets at 2:15 pm and the ride begins promptly at 2:30 pm. Starting location alternates between two locations:

  • 1st, 3rd & 5th Sundays: Bluebell Beach
  • 2nd & 4th Sundays: Chevy Commons' Kearsley Street lot (west of Grand Traverse)

Rides are typically about 13-15 miles in length and at a leisurely pace. Depending on the number of riders attending, the group may be split to make street crossings more manageable and safe. We have a no-rider-left-behind policy and encourage experienced riders, beginner riders and families to come out and ride with us. We STRONGLY encourage the use of helmets for all riders.

2nd Saturday Rides - FFRT rides various trails around Mid-Michigan on the 2nd Saturday of each month, May-October. The group meets at the designated trailhead at 9:45am, and rides at 10 am sharp. Locations announced at Sunday rides and on Facebook: bit.ly/FFRTgroup.

About the Flint River Trail

The Flint River Trail system is a network of approximately 27 miles of nonmotorized multi-use paved trails along the river and through parks and neighborhoods across Genesee County. The trail system was created in the early 1980s, but continual extensions and improvements continue through today.
